Castle history

The lap Behringen was built in 1547, in different phases, by Duke Johann Friedrich the Middle of Wangenheim, in the Renaissance style.

In 2003, the entire historic castle was completely rebuilt into a "barrier-free" hotel under the aspect of "Holidays for All" and since then has offered its guests a comprehensive service.

A detailed historical presentation can be found on the ground floor of the hotel.

From 1753 - 1830 Ernst Wilhelm von Wangenheim lived in the castle. As a result of the gambling passion of his grandson but indebted castle and land ownership, so that eventually in 1844 the ownership of Elisabeth von Trützschler passed and only in 1928, when Othmar von Wangenheim Mathilde von Trützschler married, came back into the hands of Wangenheim.

New From this marriage, three children emerged: the twins born in 1912 Elisabeth and Dorothee and 1913 born son Jobst, which fell in 1943 during World War II. Othmar von Wangenheim and the twins were until 1945 the last residents in the castle.

Elisabeth had married in 1944 at the Wartburg Carl August, Erbherzog of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. From their marriage, the children Michael Benedikt and Elisabeth emerged. Michael Benedikt, Prince of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, moved with his mother and her twin sister Dorothee after the expulsion to Munich, where Dorothee died in 2005 and Elisabeth in 2010. Elisabeth was buried on the Wartburg.

In the period from 1946 to 2001, the castle served as a refugee camp, nursing home, assisted living and psychiatric nursing home.

The castle was in 2001 in a very poor state of construction in the ownership of the municipality Behringen. From the first hour there has been a desire to preserve and restore it.
